If You'd Ask Me...

Since the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association began in 1999, a lot of planning has occurred and a lot of projects have been imagined; several have been completed.

Two major planning documents, the Corridor Management Plan and the Interpretive Plan were outlined in this newsletter as they progressed. In 2004, Inkslinger relayed the steps involved in forging our partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers and last year, the story was told of the Byway’s successful bid to attain national designation.

Projects over the years have included:

  1. Birds of the Byway brochure
  2. Tear-off map of the Byway and its resources
  3. Three designs of playing cards
  4. Original art of the Byway and art prints
  5. Shoulder paving support
  6. Construction of the Gateway Gazebo
  7. Trail Meets the Byway Interpretive panels
  8. Veterans Walking Trail, Footbridge and Wetlands Walk
  9. Chairella Walking Trail
  10. ‘Byway site’ sign markers
  11. 14 Interpretive Panels at 13 Byway sites-development and installation

Many other ideas have bubbled up and back down again. Some have been buds on the vine for several seasons just waiting for the right conditions to flower. Others are loved ideas with no funding. Some are so embryonic, no one is quite sure of their final form yet, but they’ve been deemed, “still worth talking about”. Still others are underway, but not yet completed.

But, what if we asked you? What would you say? What’s the next project the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association should undertake? How would you muster the funding?

Nearly everyone has once or twice said, “I wish they had asked me what I thought.” The other part of that sentiment, of course, is, “I wish someone would pay attention to what I have to say.”

Here’s your invitation to pass along your thoughts to the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association board. Be assured that attention will be paid to each idea. The next Inkslinger will list each idea and the funding suggestions received to implement those ideas. If you want your name connected to your suggestion, it will be. If you don’t, it won’t.

Send your ideas one of three ways: Email or fax to 218-543-6714; or by mail to PO Box 401, Pequot Lakes, MN 56472
