Projects in Progress

  • The Partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Crosslake will become official on November 3, 2004. The partnership will result in office space for the Byway, fund-raising opportunities that benefit both organizations, greater likelihood of additional partnerships with other area and regional groups, and a long-range focus on creation of an Interpretive and Educational Center.
  • The idea of a portable display rack for Byway art prints, playing cards, brochures and maps is being researched. The display could be used when giving presentations, as a traveling exhibit.
  • LCMR grant request for Habitat Protection at Rice Lake: The Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources received 221 proposals seeking a total of $240 million. There was only $30 million available for distribution. Despite a well received presentation by Byway representatives in St. Paul, LCMR funding was not approved for this project. Other sources of funding for individual components of this project may be sought in the future.
  • The Bog Walk grant request, submitted last winter to the DNR, has been recommended for approval. Final word is expected before December, 2004. Work can begin once the final approval has been received. Located at Island Lake Woods, the Bog Walk will complete the Ridge Path trail as it crosses approximately 500’ of bog, terminating at the island which features a natural scenic overlook.
