Third Annual Mounted Eagles 'Walk-N-Roll'
I had the honor and privilege of participating in the Third Annual Mounted Eagles ‘Walk-N-Roll' fundraiser. The event has been held on the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway since it started three years ago.
In a light drizzle at 8am, registration began at the Byway's Gateway Gazebo. About 8:45am the opening ceremony got underway and by this time the drizzle had changed to a steady rain. About 9am the fifty seven participants hit the Byway, so to speak.
Some participants started from the Gateway Gazebo and the rest were transported to the Old Milwaukee Club to start. Participants are sponsored to walk, ride or roll from either starting point, ending at Moonlight Bay. From the Gazebo to Moonlight is about 12 miles; from Old Milwaukee Club it's about 5 miles.
After things got started, I, Paul Bunyan, headed to Moonlight Bay to help set up the silent auction. Not even the pouring rain dampened the dedication or the enthusiasm of the participants. It was easy to see that everyone involved with the program, from the organizers at the top, all the way down to the people who got pledges and walked or rolled along, were a very dedicated group of volunteers. There were even a number of families that participated; one with a toddler about a year old. Now, that's dedication!
Moonlight Bay hosted the silent auction and awards ceremony which started at 11am. Awards were given to both the adult and child who acquired the most sponsors. The largest group of participants also received an award. It was an honor for me to help hand out the awards to these dedicated participants who had worked so hard and gotten so drenched.
This third annual Walk-N-Roll fundraiser took in over $13,000 in donations and pledges. Many thanks to the walkers and rollers, to all those who sponsored the participants, donated silent auction items or volunteered their time. And, a special thanks to Pine Motors of Pine River for providing the transport vans. Also, thanks to Moonlight Bay who hosted the finish line and donated 10% of the food and beverage sales during the event.
WHAT IS MOUNTED EAGLES?
Mounted Eagles is a non-profit organization founded in 1992 to provide therapy to disabled individuals. Horses play a major role in the disabled individual’s therapy. Participants learn to ride a horse as well as basic care of horses. The therapy seems to work miracles with a lot of participants.
Mounted Eagles is an Equine Assisted Riders Group and a North American Riders for the Handicapped Association accredited organization serving a 5 county area including Crow Wing, Cass Todd, Morrison and Mille Lacs. Currently there are 65 individuals in the program from age 3 to 68. About 50 volunteers work with the participants. 100% of all donations go directly to the program.
