More Byway kiosk sites adopted by area Master Gardeners

The arrival of the spring gardening season holds a unique appeal for the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association. For the past three years, representatives from the PBSBA have had the opportunity to present a sort of gardening ‘wish list’ to the Crow Wing County Master Gardeners. Most of the potential garden areas are around the fourteen interpretive panel kiosks that dot the 54 miles of the Byway route.

In March of 2009, after hearing board members Rod Nelson and Lynn Scharenbroich present the kiosk landscaping wish list, Master Gardeners Rebecca Olson, Deb Monchamp, Joanne Weaver, Wini Kristufek and gardener’s helper, Diane Williams, ‘adopted’ three of the thirteen kiosk sites. They designed clever garden representations of the Bunyan lore and/or the site history and then went to work to bring their visions to life.

This year, following the presentation in March, the PBSBA heard from Master Gardener, Cindy Johnson, who is currently researching the Veterans Walking Trail kiosk site on Crow Wing County Road 16 to determine whether it’s the one for her. Site sponsor, Cindy Rieck, has offered to be a gardeners helper if that site is selected.

A new idea for a Byway garden development in Pequot Lakes along the in-town portion of the Byway route’s County Road 11 has been under consideration for several years as well. The idea is centered around novelty-shaped gardens highlighting health care services. At least one Master Gardener has asked for more information about this idea.

PBSBA chair, Lynn Scharenbroich, presented information on the Byway Association’s connection with the Master Gardener’s program at the June 2 meeting of the Pequot Lakes Woman’s Club. She shared with them the steps followed by Master Gardeners when a Byway site is adopted.

If you are a Master Gardener with an interest in participating in either adopting a kiosk site or working on designing and developing the Byway health gardens idea, contact PBSBA chair, Lynn Scharenbroich, at 218-543-4714.
