Ideal Township Tops in Byway Braggin' Rights

Ideal Township, one of the 14 jurisdictions through which the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway route passes, has been an early and consistent supporter of the PBSB Association’s projects. With over nine miles of the 54 total miles in the route within the township’s borders, Ideal has the largest total number of miles of any of the jurisdictions.

Over the nine years that the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association has been active, the Township’s Board of Supervisors has welcomed annual presentations from PBSBA representatives and kept abreast of activities and operations of the group as well as supported many projects such as the Veterans Walking Trail, shoulder paving along County Road #16, and recently the Interpretive panel project.

For the past two years, during the annual presentation to the jurisdictions, the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association has offered a contest to win bragging rights in the Association’s newsletter, Inkslinger. The contest gives jurisdiction leaders a chance to show off their collective knowledge of the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway and its activities by completing a perky, fun-filled questionnaire. For two years in a row, Ideal Township has topped the other 13 jurisdictions and won the right to brag about their township in the Byway’s newsletter. Because of their strong and consistent support, the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association has also devoted a monthly newspaper space as another forum for Ideal Township bragging. With the popular Annual Beef Feed coming up soon, it’s a great time to hear more about Ideal Township, and a great opportunity for the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association to say a big public thank-you!

Ideal Township - Braggin’ Rights Winner, 2006

When Paul Bunyan and Babe came here they thought, what a beautiful spot for a little rest & relaxation. Being tired from a long winter of working the logging camps all around the Great Lakes, they laid down for a nap. After two weeks rest, they got up, saw the depression they'd made in the earth and said, "This is an Ideal spot for a big, beautiful lake!" So Paul & Babe got to working down on the river to make a dam, and soon we had the Whitefish Chain of lakes. And that's why we call this place "Ideal".

Ideal Township has long been the place people come to for rest & relaxation, and while they're here, a little recreation, too. Ideal is home to many resorts and family cabins, and there are lots of activities for everyone - boating, fishing, swimming, bicycling, hiking, snowmobiling, golfing, or dining out. At the Ideal Town Park, you can have a picnic, ball game or play horseshoes - or just let the kids loose in the playground. In August each year, you won't want to miss the Ideal Volunteer Fire Department's Beef Feed (this summer's 29th annual is August 9th from 4 - 8 p.m.). And, of course, you can bike or drive the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway and visit the many historic & natural sites along the way.
