Byway's "Call for Paul"

Back in March of 2002, the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association put out a ‘Call for Paul’ and fortune smiled on the group when Pequot Lakes resident, Wayne Chamberlain, swung his axe over his shoulder and took on the volunteer role of Paul Bunyan. He designed and built logging camp floats and appeared at community parades and events, learned nearly every tall tale and even did a few library story times for kids. ‘Paul Bunyan’ was a requested celebrity at Byway Association and area community celebrations, on media tours and at many other gatherings within the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway area.

Now Wayne has moved out of town and the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association is issuing a new ‘Call for Paul’; big body frame, rich deep voice, thick black beard and mustache (or potential for the same), twinkling dark eyes and a touch of lumberjack wit. Of course, to be a real Paul Bunyan, one would have to enjoy wearing a red and black plaid shirt. An affinity for a blue ox as a pet is a bonus!

There have been reports that such a person lives in our area. In fact, a member of the Byway Association Board purports to actually know this person. Maybe that person is you. Look in the mirror. Open your mind. Could you be the Paul Bunyan look alike we seek?

Imagine riding in local parades, being part of local and regional Scenic Byway events, showing up as a celebrity reader in libraries and schools, telling the Byway story and a few tall tales, being a magnet for children and adults alike.

Men, among you is the right man. The big, bold and brawny are not shy. Send us a few words about yourself. Maybe a picture, if you have one. Not much else can compare to being Paul Bunyan. Think about it!
